The international juried exhibition of sacred art and multidisciplinary event Light of the Logos, organized by the Kaleidoskop Cultural Centre and featuring some of the most renowned iconographers of our time, will be officially opened on August 26 at 7:30 pm at the Gallery of the Kolarac Endowment in Belgrade.

This event, held with the blessing of His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, is entirely dedicated to marking the 850th anniversary of the birth of Saint Sava.

This year, Light of the Logos also has the support of UNESCO and is part of the global celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The exhibition will present to the public 125 icons by 97 artists from 12 countries: alongside a selection of the finest sacred creations by Serbian artists over the past year, the display will also feature works by creators from Greece, the USA, Cuba, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Belarus, Republika Srpska, Germany, Latvia, and the Philippines.

The works were selected from an open call that received 209 submissions by 134 artists, including 19 from abroad.

The Art Council, consisting of: Grigore Popescu-Muscel, fresco painter (Romania), Dr. Tihon Rakićević, Vicar Bishop of His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije, Dr. Todor Mitrović, Full Professor at the Academy of the Serbian Orthodox Church for Arts and Conservation, and MA Biljana Cincar Kostić, Curator and Art Historian, Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church selected 115 works by 91 artists.

In addition, as special invited guests of the organizer, the Kaleidoskop Cultural Centre, the exhibition will feature some of the most prominent names in contemporary sacred art: Dr. Giorgos Kordis (Greece), Grigore Popescu-Muscel, Dr. Mihai Coman, Dr. Andrei Mușat (Romania), Dr. Todor Mitrović, and Bata Kidišević (Serbia).

The curatorial concept of Light of the Logos, which continues the legacy of the exhibition Portrait on the Icon, is authored by MA Luka Novaković – painter-conservator and doctoral candidate at the University of Belgrade’s Multidisciplinary Doctoral Studies program in the History and Philosophy of Natural Sciences and Technology.

The gallery space will also serve as a meeting point and place of collaboration for artists from various countries during two master classes that are part of the event.

On August 27 and 28, artists from Romania – professors from the Academy in Bucharest – will paint on the site together with professors from Belgrade academies, sharing their knowledge and experience with artists from Serbia.

A few days later, from September 2 to 4, master gilder and painter Todor Lepčević will lead a three-day master class The Art of Gilding: Tradition and Innovation, with a special focus on creating icons entirely in gold.

All workshops are open to the public, giving gallery visitors a unique opportunity to interact directly with great contemporary artists and to witness the creative process of sacred works that embody the cultural and spiritual identity of Serbia, rooted in centuries of Byzantine heritage.
